In Paradise, Pennsylvania, Cate Miller is known more for her sharp tongue and fiery temper than her striking appearance. Her sweet and flirty sister, Betsy, on the other hand, seems to have attracted most of the bachelors in Lancaster County!
But the sisters' wealthy father has made one hard-and-fast rule: older Cate must marry first, before younger Betsy can even start courting. Unfortunately, untamable Cate has driven away every suitor—until Pete Treger comes to town, that is.
Prodded by the men of the area, Pete turns his attention to winning Cate's hand. But is his interest true or is there a scheme at play?
Book 1 in The Courtships of Lancaster County series.
My take: When I first picked up this book to read, the thought that ran through my head was why on earth did I request another Amish book? I enjoy Amish fiction, but I quickly tire of it, so I haven't been reading it very often anymore. Then I flipped the book over and read the back copy ... and then I knew why I'd requested it—it's based on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew! I can't get enough of modern retellings of classic literature, and The Taming of the Shrew is probably my third favorite of Shakespeare's plays (behind Much Ado About Nothing and Hamlet, just in case you were wondering). Win-win!
So even though I had a pretty good idea of how this book would turn out, I enjoyed every minute I spent reading Courting Cate. It's humorous, heartwarming, thought provoking, and just plain fun! 4-1/2 stars.
