About the book (from Litfuse): A Story of Hope and Love Set Against the Backdrop of World War II
Lydia Eldredge longs to provide sanctuary for her young son, Nicky. But a constant threat comes from Nicky's drug-addicted father, who wants the boy and seems willing to do whatever it takes to get him.
Dr. Micah Hatcher faithfully serves the immigrant population of Queens, New York. But under cover of darkness, he has a secret mission that challenges everything he thought he wanted out of life.
When Lydia and Micah's paths cross, they are suddenly wrapped up in each other's callings. Together, they seek a refuge of safety—for Nicky, for themselves, and for the needy people God puts into their lives. Amid turmoil and discord, can hope and love prevail?
My take: It's no secret that World War II is my favorite time period to read about. So when I learned that Kim Vogel Sawyer, an author whose previous work I've enjoyed, had written a book set during WWII, I knew I wanted to read it.
Sweet Sanctuary shows a side of WWII that I'd never considered before—the plight of Jewish children who escaped from German-controlled countries. I also couldn't believe how little Americans knew about what was really occurring in Europe ... but then again, even today we're often oblivious to the horrors going on around us.
I really enjoyed the relationship between Lydia and Micah, and Nicky was absolutely adorable. Also, Sawyer threw in a few major twists that I didn't at all anticipate but greatly enjoyed. I did find a few things regarding Lydia and Micah's relationship to be a bit far-fetched (but I won't go into detail and spoil it for you). Overall, though, I really enjoyed Sweet Sanctuary, and I highly recommend it. 4-1/2 stars.
