"on distant shores" by sarah sundin

About the book (from the back cover): Caught between the war raging around them and the battles within, two souls long for peace—and a love that remains true.

Lt. Georgiana Taylor has everything she could want. A boyfriend back home, a loving family, and a challenging job as a flight nurse. But in July 1943, Georgie's cozy life gets more complicated when she meets pharmacist Sgt. John Hutchinson.

Hutch resents the lack of respect he gets as a noncommissioned serviceman and hates how the war keeps him from his fiancée. While Georgie and Hutch share a love of the starry night skies over Sicily, their lives back home are falling apart. Can they weather the hurt and betrayal? Or will the pressures of war destroy the fragile connection they've made?

With her signature attention to detail and her talent for bringing characters together, Sarah Sundin weaves an exciting tale of emotion, action, and romance that will leave you wanting more.

My take: Two years ago, I read Blue Skies Tomorrow, my first Sarah Sundin novel. I absolutely devoured it, and I even named it my favorite book of 2011. One year ago, I read Sundin's With Every Letter. Once again, I was captivated, and it made my list of favorite books of 2012. I eagerly anticipated the release of On Distant Shores—and now that I've read it, I can confidently say that it will make my top 10 list for 2013!

Sundin's writing draws me in in a way that few authors can. I love her subject matter—World War II—and she fills her novels with historical details that could be boring but are instead captivating. Take this novel, for instance. She writes about the plight of pharmacy in the Army in a way that made me want to storm Washington and demand fair treatment for pharmacists. (Of course, this happened in the 1940's, so things have since been righted.)

I also love the way she writes romance. Georgie and Hutch's romance was so fun to watch develop, and their trials seemed very realistic, not contrived. I cared about Georgie and Hutch as individuals, too—so it wasn't only about the romance. Also, readers of With Every Letter will be happy to watch Tom & Mellie's story continue, but the novel can be enjoyed without having first read With Every Letter.

Sundin has become a must-read author for me ... I just wish I didn't always have to wait a year between releases!

My rating: 5 stars (plus more!)
