Well, shortly after posting my Spring TBR list, I can check one off: I finally started The Engagement Plot, and it's a quick, engaging, enjoyable read!
Can Hanna and Will Find True Love Amid the Bright Lights of Reality TV?
Six months ago, William stole Hanna’s heart and shattered it in front of millions of people on a reality TV dating show. And now the big-wig CEO is back on Hanna’s home turf in Minnesota and wants her to forgive him? Fat chance of that. But life is swirling around faster than snow in a blizzard, and despite her objections, teaming up with William seems like the only option to rescue her reputation.
William has never regretted anything more than the day he gave that ill-fated interview for the reality show, The Price of Love. But while he can’t change the past, he’s determined to fix the future. He just needs to convince Hanna to forgive him—and pretend to be engaged with him. Simple, right?
When the media erupts with even worse accusations, teaming up and pretending to be engaged seems to be the only way to salvage their reputations. Despite the media frenzy that swirls around them, an attraction neither of them can fight off begins to surface. Could this love run deeper than a scandal, or will old wounds tear them apart once and for all? When all seems lost, it’s only with help from above that Hanna and Will may find their happily-ever-after.
Perfect for the fans of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette!
You know how they say not to judge a book by its cover? Well, The Engagement Plot is case in point. I am absolutely, 100%, unquestionably not a fan of this cover. I think that's why it took me so long to start reading; the description all but guaranteed I'd love it.
And love it I did.
Is it completely preposterous? Yes. But then, The Bachelor isn't the most realistic thing on the planet, either. So I say suspend your disbelief and just enjoy the ride 😉.
The story picks up several months after Hanna won The Price of Love ... and Will made comments in an interview that made their relationship seem more intimate than it really was. The book begins when Will treks to Minnesota to try to patch things up with Hanna. I really enjoyed this "after the cameras stop rolling" look at a reality TV relationship.
While this is mainly a fun romance, it also deals with several deeper issues—like pride in our "goodness," judging others, and Christians' propensity to attack their own over perceived moral failures.
The novel does feature a little bit of "just talk about it already" syndrome, which always drives me crazy. I won't spoil anything by going into details, but Hanna and Will's lack of communication/jumping to conclusions feels especially off because of everything they went through with the tabloids after the reality show ended.
Overall, though, I really enjoyed this book! It's a quick, fun read. 4 stars.
Buy the book.
