First Line Fridays: "Sons of Blackbird Mountain"

Happy Friday! For those of us in the US, this is our second Tuesday/second Friday of the week, thanks to Independence Day on Wednesday. Needless to say, I've been confused about what day it is all week long.

In addition to the 4th of July, I also celebrated six years with my cats this week. Isis joined me on July 3, 2012, when my dad rescued her from work, and Hammond and Skaara arrived from my aunt and uncle's house the next day. Somehow, they survived a year of being outdoor cats, and then almost five years ago I bought my house and they became house cats. Though I do think Isis misses hunting (she was quite the little huntress), they've adapted well to the cushy life of a house cat 😉.

Here's a throwback to their first day together (clockwise from left): Isis, Hammond, Skaara. Weren't they the cutest things ever?

Now to the books! Today, I'm sharing the first line of my current read, Joanne Bischof's Sons of Blackbird Mountain.

"Aven peered down at the letter again, noted the address written in Aunt Dorothe's hand, then looked back to the wooden sign that was staked into the ground."

I absolutely adored Bischof's The Lady and the Lionheart (I mean, who didn't?), so I've been looking forward to this one! My review will be up on Sunday ... which means I really need to get reading!

Check out the book on Amazon & Goodreads.

  1. Happy Friday!

We picked the same book this week! I'm reviewing it next week, so I need to read it soon, too.

I’m reading Newlywed Games by Mary Davis right now, so here’s the first line: “Bruce Halloway had looked up with a start when he heard the ruckus outside his office window.”

  2. Happy Friday!😎 I have that book to read too! I can’t wait to get to it!😃

My first lines come from Loving Grace by April Smith.

I’M LATE. THE PHONE IS already ringing off the wall by the time I make it to my desk. I toss my keys and bag to the side, not really bothering with where they land. I’ll get them later. I grab the phone and snag the corner of the desk with my hip. That’s going to leave a mark.

Have an awesome weekend and happy reading!😊

    1. Thanks, Ellie! I'm a bit partial to them :-) They're not as adorable now that they're 14, 12, and 10 pounds, but I still love them just the same ;-) Thanks for stopping by!

  6. I’m sharing from Hurricane Season by Lauren K. Denton on my blog today, so here is the first line from chapter 2:

“The babysitter was late, Addie and Walsh were flying around the house in superhero capes yelling the Batman theme song–“Da-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-Batman!”–and Jenna had just poured a mug of coffee when Walsh bumped into her from behind, spilling hot liquid down the front of her black Full Cup Coffee T-shirt.”

    Happy Friday!

    1. Obviously, the 4th of July has fallen on a Wednesday before, but I can't remember it throwing me for this much of a loop! Maybe I just always took vacation ...

  8. This week for FLF, I am showcasing Roseanna M. White's novel Whispers From the Shadows. Here, I will post the first line from chapter 2 in the book I'm just starting today, The Hope of Azure Springs by Rachel Fordham.

    "Em, you look so improved."

Kind of sounds insulting...I'll have to read on and find out the context. 😉

Hope you're having a blessed weekend with lots of fun reading time. 😊

  9. The book I shared on my blog is The Hidden Side by Heidi Chiavaroli, but I'm currently reading Things I Never Told You by Beth K Vogt so I'll share that first line here: "The what-ifs taunted me every time I visited my parents, but any hope of beginning again had vanished years ago--if there'd ever been one. Hope you have a great weekend!
