First Line Fridays: "A Worthy Rebel"

Hallelujah, it's Friday! And Monday is Labor Day for those of us in the States, so it's a three-day weekend! Considering I just was on vacation last week (to San Francisco—see more here), I probably shouldn't be quite so excited, but I'm thrilled to have Monday off!

I'm hoping to make great progress painting my parents' kitchen cabinets ... a project my mom and I have been working on (and off and on) since April. And the first Husker football game of the season is on Saturday! Plus, there's always baseball (Go Cubs Go!). I'm also hoping to get some reading done.

Today, I'm spotlighting a book I just finished reading! It releases on Tuesday, and it's perfect for teens: Jody Hedlund's A Worthy Rebel.

Pembroke Castle, Western Midlands
September, in the year of our Lord 1395

"'Upon our arrival,' Lady Margaret said, flicking her reins and prodding her mare to a trot, 'Sir Thomas will be expecting your agreement of marriage.'"

I LOVED THIS BOOK! Hedlund's entire medieval YA series has been wonderful, and this book is no exception! In a world where YA is increasingly profane and sexual, this series is a breath of fresh air. And I love the lessons it teaches! (Plus, all of the books feature wonderful love stories.) 5 stars.

Check out the book on Amazon & Goodreads.
Read my reviews of the other books in the series: The Vow (4 stars), An Uncertain Choice (5 stars), A Daring Sacrifice (4-1/2 stars), For Love & Honor (5 stars), and A Loyal Heart (5 stars).

  1. Happy Friday!๐Ÿ˜Š

My first lines come from a book I will be reading shortly, Unleashed by Donna Kauffman.

Emma Lafferty’s life had gone to the dogs. Literally. And to the cats. And the parakeets, goldfish, hamsters, even the occasional potbelly pig. What it and her fledgling pet-sitting service hadn’t gone to was her bank account. Not enough, anyway.

Have a great weekend and happy reading!๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’–

  2. Happy holiday weekend!

Here's the first line from All of You by Sarah Monzon, my current read. "Lieutenant Michael "Finch" Carrington pulled up the zipper of his green flight suit and stared at the mass on the opposite rack."

  3. I've been meaning to read this series. I love Jody's Orphan Train series.

Over on my blog, I'm sharing the first line from Lynnette Bonner's High Desert Haven. Here, I'll share one of my favorite lines from Crossed Out by Christina Coryell (her contribution to the Once Upon A Laugh novella collection):

Kids at yard sales were nearly impossible to corral. Grandmas watching kids at yard sales were like wild mustangs, throwing caution and endless quarters to the wind.

    Have a great weekend!

Here, I’m sharing lines from Keira Montclair’s Falling for the Chieftan. It’s her new historical time travel romance.

“Allison Sutton’s feet hit water as she plunged into the murky liquid at the base of the cascading falls.”

    Happy Reading!

  6. I'm sharing the first line from a book I've borrowed with Kindle Unlimited, because I have a three month free subscription. Its called 'The Holy Lance' by Andrew Latham and is about English Knights Templar.

    11th July 1191

"Brother Michael Fitz Alan could not see the Saracen army, but he could hear both the rhythmic beating of its massive war drums and the unmistakable clamour of its warriors assembling in anticipation of the day's slaughter".

I may now be controversial, but I'm not very keen on that series by Jody Hedlund. Don't kill me! Its just that its not historically accurate, but people think it is. That's why I wish the author did not use real place names, because it confuses readers and makes them think its real when its not.

    1. We're all entitled to our opinions! I've never worried about whether medieval series I read are historically accurate, but I can understand how it would be troubling to someone who actually knows about medieval history :-) Kind of like how I HATE when writers inaccurately portray Nebraska. (Believe it or not, we do have electricity and the internet here ...)

    2. Ha ha. I believe you! I sort of feel that way about some British Fiction. As a British person, some of it just makes me want to cringe - or scream.

    Happy Saturday!

Yesterday on my blog, I shared the first lines from Cara Putman's novel Delayed Justice. Here I will share the first line from the novel I'm currently reading, An Unpresentable Glory by Eleanor Gustafson.

"On her return from church, Kileenda Jensen discovered a problem, and it had nothing to do with her name."

Hope you have an awesome weekend!!! ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ“š

  8. I know I'm late for Friday, so happy Labor Day weekend! My first line is from Under Prairie Skies by Cynthia Roemer.

"The sound of a spry whistle froze Charlotte Stanton in her tracks. She tightened her hold on her bucket of creek water, eyes narrowing."
