I absolutely loved A Dangerous Legacy, the first book in Elizabeth Camden's Empire State series, when I read it last year. So of course I jumped at the chance to read the sequel, A Daring Venture!
As a biochemist in early 1900s New York City, Doctor Rosalind Werner has dedicated her life to the crusade against water-borne diseases. She is at the forefront of a groundbreaking technology that will change the way water is delivered to every household in the city—but only if she can get people to believe in her work.
Newly appointed Commissioner of Water for New York Nicholas Drake is highly skeptical of Rosalind and her team's techniques. When a brewing court case throws him into direct confrontation with her, he is surprised by his reaction to the lovely scientist.
While Rosalind and Nick wage a private war against their own attraction, they stand firmly on opposite sides of a battle that will impact far more than just their own lives. As the controversy grows more public and inflammatory and Rosalind becomes the target of an unknown enemy, these two rivals will face higher stakes than they ever could have known.
A Daring Venture is another intriguing romance from Elizabeth Camden! It's much heavier on the romance (and lighter on the intrigue) than A Dangerous Legacy was, as much of the story centers around Rosalind and Nick's relationship. In fact, it was the part that was more suspenseful that fell a little flat for me—I think I would've enjoyed the book more had it just been about Rosalind and Nick and the water controversy instead of having so much to do with his family (which is really the part of the novel that carries over from the first book).
I really liked Rosalind as a main character, though I do feel she was too passive in her relationship with her sister-in-law. Rosalind's work with the chlorination project was fascinating (wouldn't have guessed going in that I'd enjoy learning about chlorine!), and I loved the relationship she built with Nick. I did think, though, that there weren't enough consequences for her actions. She made some questionable choices, but everything was resolved really conveniently, and she didn't really face any lasting consequences. I like that Rosalind's story ended up as it did; I just wish it had been a bit more difficult for her to get there.
While I didn't love this book as much as the first, I still liked it a lot. Camden is a great writer, and I can't wait to see what she comes out with next! 3-1/2 stars.
