Review: "Hidden Peril" by Irene Hannon

I'm a big fan of Irene Hannon's Hope Harbor series, which reminds me of Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove. I knew that Hannon also wrote romantic suspense, but I'd never read any of hers ... until now. I had no idea what I was missing!

The most dangerous enemy is the one who has nothing to lose

As teenagers, Kristin Dane and her two best friends took a vow to make the world a better place. Twenty years later, she's fulfilling that pledge through her fair trade shop that features products from around the world. All is well until, one by one, people connected to the shop begin dying.

Detective Luke Carter, new to the St. Louis PD, wants to know why. Before he can answer that question, however, the FBI weighs in and Kristin suddenly finds herself in the middle of international intrigue--and in the sights of the ruthless mastermind behind an ingenious and deadly scheme. Can this cold-blooded killer be stopped before more people die . . . including Kristin?

Three-time RITA Award-winner and "queen of inspirational romantic suspense" (Library Journal) Irene Hannon doesn't disappoint in this edge-of-your-seat thriller that will have you up late as you rush toward the explosive conclusion.

Often, romantic suspense novels are heavy on either the romance or the suspense to the detriment of the other. Not so here: the romance and the suspense are both on point.

The short timeline of many suspense novels often makes any romance seem rushed. In Hidden Peril, though, the action is spread out over several months, making the progress in the romance feel natural. Also, there's a bit more romance than I expected, and I'm always good with more romance! The suspense moves along at a good pace, and, while I had a sneaking suspicion one of the characters wasn't what he/she seemed (no spoilers here!), I only figured out who he/she was right before the big reveal in the book. So I felt smart, but I didn't feel like the identity was too obvious.

This is a book that sucks you in at the beginning and keeps you engaged throughout. I even found myself thinking about it when I wasn't reading! This is excellent romantic suspense, and I'll definitely be coming back for more from Hannon. 5 stars.

Note: Though this is the second book in Hannon's Code of Honor series, it functions as a stand-alone novel. I had no trouble jumping in without having first read book one.
