Review: "Start with Me" by Kara Isaac
I've read two Kara Isaac books in the past, and I loved them—especially All Made Up, which was such fun! So when I learned she had a new book releasing, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it!
Lacey O’Connor is finally a sure thing for the promotion she’s spent ten years working for. But when a scandal rocks her firm she finds herself on a collision course with the one person she has spent five years trying to forget. Only to discover he doesn’t even remember her…
Victor Carlisle has spent the last three years trying to convince his family he’s no longer the playboy alcoholic who tore their life apart. When a company merger is announced with a US sister firm, he’s presented with the perfect opportunity to prove he’s changed. Only to find himself falling for his competition and the one woman his family will never accept.
As the competition intensifies the choice looms between the professional and the personal. Can they find a way beyond their past decisions and present aspirations to take a chance on the one thing they’re not looking for?
Start with Me is such a fun romance! Lacey and Victor have a past—that Victor can't remember—and that creates a bit of an enemies-to-lovers/second chance romance dynamic that's a lot of fun to watch.
Victor—brother of Peter from Can't Help Falling—is looking for redemption. After going through rehab and renewing his faith, he's not the man he once was ... but some people (especially Peter) are determined to keep him in that immature/reckless/playboy box. After spending some time with Victor, Lacey sees that he truly is a changed man, a man she could see herself with. However, the fact that they're both vying for promotions within their merging companies and the strict no-fraternization policy complicate matters.
Quite a bit of the book centers around the office dynamics and the competition for places in the new merged company, and I have to admit that I didn't really care much about that. Perhaps I should've been pulling for Lacey and Victor to get the jobs of their dreams, but really, all I could care about was their relationship! Their chemistry was palpable, and I especially loved the way that Lacey became Victor's champion with his family. This ended up being such a satisfying romance, and it reminded me again why I love Kara Isaac's writing. 4-1/2 stars.
Note: While this is a stand-alone novel, readers would probably find it helpful to have the background knowledge that Can't Help Falling provides—especially since that book proves that Peter isn't always a jerk!

Kara Isaac lives in Wellington, New Zealand. When she's not chasing three hobbit-sized little people, she spends her time writing horribly bad first drafts and wishing you could get Double Stuf Oreos in New Zealand. She is the author of the RITA Award-winning Then There Was You, along with four other contemporary romances. She loves to connect with readers on GoodReads, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and through her website.
