About a year ago, I got a happy surprise package in the mail. It contained To All the Boys I've Loved Before ... and nothing else. Turns out, it was from my sister Val, who said I needed to read the book. Now, finally, I have.
What if all the crushes you ever had found out how you felt about them… all at once?
Sixteen-year-old Lara Jean Song keeps her love letters in a hatbox her mother gave her. They aren’t love letters that anyone else wrote for her; these are ones she’s written. One for every boy she’s ever loved—five in all. When she writes, she pours out her heart and soul and says all the things she would never say in real life, because her letters are for her eyes only. Until the day her secret letters are mailed, and suddenly, Lara Jean’s love life goes from imaginary to out of control.
To All the Boys I've Loved Before is simply delightful! I loved Lara Jean and her evolving relationships with several of the boys her letters were sent to. But I especially loved her family (well, her older sister not so much. But her dad and little sister were great) and the way they interacted with each other.
When the book ended, I was both surprised (by the direction of Lara Jean's love life) and not surprised (by revelation of the letters' mailer ... I called it the instant Lara Jean's letters went missing). But, most importantly, I was satisfied. To All the Boys I've Loved Before is a fabulous read, and I can't wait to dive into book two! 4-1/2 stars.
Content note: The book contains a smattering of mild curse words, as well as a couple "f-bombs." It's revealed that characters close to Lara Jean slept together, and Lara Jean is (falsely) accused of sleeping with her boyfriend, but the sexual content on the page never goes beyond kissing. Think mild PG-13.
Buy the book.
