When I was in junior high, an high school couple from my Christian school got pregnant. I'll never forget the discussion I had with my mom after we all found out. I said something like, "Well, at least they're getting married." My mom stopped walking (I can still see exactly where we were at the time), looked at me, and said, "Becky, two wrongs don't make a right. Two teenagers getting married because they're having a baby won't magically fix everything, and it just might make things worse." It rocked my world, as I just assumed that the "right" thing to do was get married. Well, my mom was right in this case: the couple got married, and a few years later, they divorced.
I haven't thought of that situation in years, but as I read My Second Chance, it jumped to the forefront of my mind. I'll admit that for a while as I read, I was afraid that Corry was going to go down the "lets get married" path. What she gave us instead is a very measured look at the reality of teen pregnancy and the difficulty of the choices that must be made. Plus, there's a swoony romance 😉.
Parts of the novel seemed slow, and I did get tired of Juliette and her mother's continuous lying about her situation (I'm surprised it took Juliette's friends as long to figure things out as it did), but overall, I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't as "unputdownable" as some of Corry's others, but it was still quite enjoyable. 4 stars.
Content note: Due to the subject matter, sex is discussed, but the sexual content on the page is limited to some passionate kissing. The characters who were sexually active talk about wishing they had waited and regretting not thinking through the consequences of their actions.
