Review: "My Second Chance" by Judy Corry

Judy Corry's latest Ridgewater High novel deals with a subject that can be tricky: teen pregnancy. Having read her previous novels, I was fairly sure that, no matter where the characters began the novel, the pregnancy would end up being treated in a life-affirming way, but I was curious about how everything else—the sex that resulted in the pregnancy, the relationship between the main characters, and the choice for or against adoption—would be handled.

What results is a book that doesn't shy away from the realities of sex and could spark some great discussion about actions and their consequences.

Her summer fling with her best friend's brother was supposed to stay a secret...

Seventeen-year-old Juliette Cardini has been keeping a secret for months. Before she went to her semester abroad in Paris, she dated her best friend’s older brother, Easton Stevens. What had started as a whirlwind romance filled with forbidden meetings, came to a crashing halt when they crossed a line together that neither of them could return from.

Now she’s back in Ridgewater and has to face everyone she left behind. But there’s one more secret she is afraid for anyone to discover. She’s pregnant. And Easton is the father.

But she has a plan: go to her grandma’s house in Buffalo for the next few months. Keep the baby a secret. No one will ever have to know. But when Juliette sees signs that Easton might want a second chance, she wonders if keeping everything to herself is the best choice.

Can a relationship built on such a rocky foundation have a chance at a happy ending? And what will Easton do if Juliette’s secret comes out?

MY SECOND CHANCE is a standalone novel in The Ridgewater High series, a collection of simmering YA contemporary romances. If you like sweet romance with ballad-worthy chemistry, swoony kisses and endearing characters, then you'll love Judy Corry's latest book.

When I was in junior high, an high school couple from my Christian school got pregnant. I'll never forget the discussion I had with my mom after we all found out. I said something like, "Well, at least they're getting married." My mom stopped walking (I can still see exactly where we were at the time), looked at me, and said, "Becky, two wrongs don't make a right. Two teenagers getting married because they're having a baby won't magically fix everything, and it just might make things worse." It rocked my world, as I just assumed that the "right" thing to do was get married. Well, my mom was right in this case: the couple got married, and a few years later, they divorced.

I haven't thought of that situation in years, but as I read My Second Chance, it jumped to the forefront of my mind. I'll admit that for a while as I read, I was afraid that Corry was going to go down the "lets get married" path. What she gave us instead is a very measured look at the reality of teen pregnancy and the difficulty of the choices that must be made. Plus, there's a swoony romance 😉.

Parts of the novel seemed slow, and I did get tired of Juliette and her mother's continuous lying about her situation (I'm surprised it took Juliette's friends as long to figure things out as it did), but overall, I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't as "unputdownable" as some of Corry's others, but it was still quite enjoyable. 4 stars.

Content note:
Due to the subject matter, sex is discussed, but the sexual content on the page is limited to some passionate kissing. The characters who were sexually active talk about wishing they had waited and regretting not thinking through the consequences of their actions.

Read my reviews of Corry's Ridgewater High books Meet Me There (4 stars), Don't Forget Me (3-1/2 stars), and It Was Always You (4-1/2 stars) and her billionaire romance The Billionaire Bachelor (4 stars).

Judy Corry has been addicted to love stories for as long as she can remember. She reads and writes YA & Clean Contemporary Romance because she can't get enough of the feeling of falling in love. She graduated from Southern Utah University in an area that has nothing to do with writing. Some of her favorite things are chick flicks, singing, and playing the piano. She believes in swoon-worthy kisses and happily ever afters.

Judy met her soul mate while in high school, and married him a few years later. She and her husband are raising four beautiful and crazy children in Southern Utah.
