A 25-year-old murder. A teenager who needs protection. A long-forgotten past. An intriguing new cop on the police force. These things converge to take Elite Guardians bodyguard Haley Callaghan on a ride she'd never anticipated in the finale of Lynette Eason's Elite Guardians series.
Intensity. Skill. Tenacity.
The bodyguards of Elite Guardians Agency have it all.
When a photo leads investigators in West Ireland to open a twenty-five-year-old cold case, Elite Guardians bodyguard Haley Callaghan's life is suddenly in danger. Haley knows how to take care of herself; after all, she's made a career out of taking care of others. But after she has an uncomfortably close call, Detective Steven Rothwell takes it upon himself to stay with her--and the young client she has taken under her wing. A protector at heart, he's not about to let Haley fight this battle alone.
In a sweeping plot that takes them into long-buried memories--and the depths of the heart--Haley and Steven will have to solve the mystery of Haley's past while dodging bullets, bombs, and bad guys who just won't quit.
Though Lynette Eason writes fast-paced suspense, she always manages to make her characters the focal point of her novels. This is once again the case in Chasing Secrets, which sees Elite Guardians bodyguard Haley Callaghan fighting for her own life while she also seeks to protect Zeke, a teen boy threatened by his mother's boyfriend. Haley is an incredibly intriguing and likeable character, and I was immediately drawn into her story. Steven, a detective with the Columbia police force, is interesting in his own right—he's more than just a potential romantic partner for Haley; he has his own compelling story.
While the suspense level isn't as high in Chasing Secrets as it was in Moving Target, the previous book in the series, I still found myself flying through the pages as I tried to determine who was out to get Haley. (All of my guesses turned out to be wrong, by the way!) The beginning of the novel did feel a little slow and disjointed as various characters were introduced, but overall, I greatly enjoyed my reading experience. This is a fitting conclusion to Eason's Elite Guardians series, and I can't wait for Oath of Honor, the first book in her upcoming Blue Justice series! 4 stars.
