"without warning" by lynette eason
An incredibly intriguing plot kept me glued to Without Warning from beginning to end. Lynette Eason knows how to write suspense!Intensity. Skill. Tenacity.
The bodyguards of Elite Guardians Agency have it all.
Katie Singleton, a partner with the Elite Guardians Protection Agency, stumbles upon her next assignment quite by accident. Spotting blue lights at a familiar restaurant, she stops to investigate, only to discover that owner Daniel Matthews has become the target of someone who will go to any lengths to put him out of business.
Daniel might be concerned, but he's not convinced that a bodyguard--and a female one at that--is necessary. A new attack and his niece's urgings are enough to make him reconsider. He and Katie must figure out who's behind the intimidation and threats--before a would-be killer strikes again.
Without Warning, the second book in Lynette Eason's Elite Guardians series, begins at a lightning pace that doesn't let down until the very end. While this is the second book in the series, I had no trouble jumping in without first having read book one. The action moves quickly and so much happens, yet I never felt lost or confused ... I just wanted to keep reading! Without Warning has a top-notch plot.
I really enjoyed the suspense aspect of this novel. I was constantly guessing the identity of the villain, and I ended up partially right and partially flabbergasted. (You'll have to read the book to see what I mean!) I especially loved Eason's choice to write portions of the novel from the villain's perspective—it gave glimpses of the villain's identity without revealing too much.
For me, the romance was just okay. I liked Katie and Daniel separately, and they were fine together, but I never found myself pulling for them as a couple. So even though Without Warning is classified as romantic suspense, I would say it's heavy on the suspense and light on the romance.
I decided to read Without Warning because a friend whose opinion I totally trust raved about Always Watching, book one in the series. I'm so glad I picked it up—I'm learning that you can't go wrong with a Lynette Eason novel! 4 stars.

As is often the case with novella collections, the contents are a mixed bag. Some novellas I loved, and others were just so-so.
Missing by Dee Henderson: I started reading Henderson's romantic suspense in college, and I absolutely devoured her O'Malley series. This is the first of her writing that I've read in probably close to ten years, and I have to say, I didn't really enjoy it. The story is fine—John returns to Chicago when his mother goes missing, and he begins working with Chicago cop Sharon to find her. The mystery was intriguing, and though I did accurately guess who had John's mother, I was way off on the motive. The problem for me was that Henderson told the reader that John and Sharon were falling for each other, but it was all talk—there was a lack of emotion that made me not buy the two romantically. 2-1/2 stars.
Shadowed by Dani Pettrey: Pettrey's Alaskan Courage series featuring the McKenna family is one of my favorite series of all time, so I was thrilled to dive into the love story of Ben McKenna and Libby Jennings, who would later become the parents of the McKenna tribe. (They are long dead by the time the Alaskan Courage series begins, so it was nice to meet them.) The mystery surrounds the murder of one of Libby's swimming competitors, and as Libby and Ben investigate, they find their lives in danger. For me, the love story was a bit rushed, but the suspense was spot on. And, as always, Pettrey's writing was excellent. 4 stars.
Blackout by Lynette Eason: Of the three novellas included in this collection, Blackout is by far my favorite. Macey survived being shot and buried alive as a teenager, but her memories of that tragic night have been dim at best. When she finally starts remembering, she becomes a target. Macey's next door neighbor Chad, a police detective, helps her search for the person who is after her, but the closer they get to the truth, the more dangerous things become. Eason is known for her high-octane suspense, and Blackout certainly lives up to her reputation! Also, the romance in this novella doesn't feel rushed (as the two are friends prior to the novel's beginning), which lent an air of believability to the story. 5 stars.
Overall, I enjoyed Sins of the Past, and, while I definitely connected with some novellas more than others, I think most fans of romantic suspense will enjoy this collection. 4 stars.

"no place to hide" by lynette eason

It's not every day you see your childhood friend and onetime crush on national news. Jackie Sellers just wishes it were under different circumstances. She can't believe that Ian Lockwood is wanted in connection with a terrorist plot, and she's determined to find him and help him clear his name. Unfortunately, she's not the only one looking for him. The FBI wants him captured. The bad guys want him dead. Ian just wants to stay alive long enough to prove his innocence and prevent a catastrophe.
Lynette Eason delivers nonstop action as Jackie and Ian travel a dangerous road—one that may lead straight to destruction.
No Place to Hide takes place in an incredibly short time span—about a week—but it seems like it's longer because so. much. happens. There are no lags in the action—everything proceeds at breakneck speed.
In spite of all the action, Eason does a great job of fleshing out the characters of Ian and Jackie, and their romance, while not the main thrust of the book, is quite satisfying. And I enjoyed seeing Jackie's character grow as she worked through some things from her past and came to embrace God's role in her life.
Some minor characters, though, are hard to keep track of, largely because there are so many of them, and they only appear every so often. But it was easy enough to brush them off and keep going, as I wanted to find out what would happen next in Ian and Jackie's story. By the end of the novel, I did have a pretty good handle on who was who ... at least who was important to pay attention to!
Overall, I really enjoyed No Place to Hide ... it's a high-adrenaline read that's a nice break from the romance that I normally read! 4 stars.
Note: This is the third book in Eason's Hidden Identity series, but it can easily be read without having first read the others.

In Nowhere to Turn, book two in the Hidden Identity series, author Lynette Eason takes the audience on an intense, fully satisfying journey. From the moment I began reading until I turned the last page, I was hooked. Though I found the beginning to be a tad confusing due to the vast array of characters introduced, I kept reading (because really, how could I not when the story was so exciting?), and soon I figured out at least who it was important to keep track of.
The romance in this novel is very low key—which I think is a good thing, as too much romance would have detracted from the break-neck speed of the action. (You never thought you'd hear me say I was glad for minimal romance, did you?)
While this is book two in a series, it definitely works as a stand alone novel. (I haven't read book one, and I didn't even realize this was a sequel until I was about a quarter of the way through the book.) But you'll probably want to go back and read book one, as Nowhere to Turn will leave you wanting to read more about the Hidden Identity world! 4 stars.
