Over the past few years, Robin Lee Hatcher has become one of my go-to authors for contemporary inspirational romance. Her well-drawn characters and intriguing stories always draw me in. Cross My Heart, her latest release, is no different.
Can two broken paths lead toward God’s redemption?
When Ashley Showalter and Ben Henning meet on Ashley’s horse rescue farm, they quickly discover how much they have in common. Both were raised by single moms. Both want to help where they see a need. And both work with horses in the Boise valley. Ben needs Ashley’s help and expertise after starting an equine therapy barn on his great-great-grandfather’s farm—and the more time they spend together, both Ashley and Ben have the feeling that there could be something more between them.
They also carry the burden of past experiences that may drive them apart if the truth is ever revealed. Cross My Heart is a sweet second novel in Robin Lee Hatcher's Legacy of Faith series. It's a split-time novel that focuses on Ben Henning and Ashley Showalter in the present and Andrew Henning (Ben's great-great-grandfather) during the second World War. Ben and Ashley's story is completely contained within this book; to better understand Andrew and his family, it would be best to read the first book, Who I Am With You, first.
Ben and Ashley are both hurting due to addiction (for him, it's the consequences of his own alcoholism and foolish choices; for her, it's her brother's opioid addiction); they bond over Ben's dream of opening an equine therapy barn and find they have much in common, including a relationship with Christ.
Andrew's story picks up right before the start of World War II (and, again, I really think you should read Who I Am With You to get his full story); now a father of five, he helps shepherd his family through the fears, anger, joys, and sorrows of war time. I think that because I already "knew" Andrew and what he had been through in the past, I was especially drawn into his story (and maybe even shed a few tears).
One of the ways I can tell I'm really into a book is when I feel compelled to flip ahead to find out if something I fear will happen actually happens ... and, at a certain point in this novel, I did exactly that! From the moment I started reading Cross My Heart, I was pulled into Ben and Ashley's story, and I also loved visiting Andrew and his family again. The Legacy of Faith series has been wonderful so far, and I can't wait to continue it (and to meet up with Andrew again) in the next book. 4-1/2 stars.
