About Dawn Crandall

A graduate of Taylor University with a degree in Christian Education, and a former bookseller at Barnes & Noble, Dawn Crandall didn’t begin writing until her husband found out about her long-buried dream of writing a book. Without a doubt about someday becoming traditionally published, he encouraged her to quit her job in 2010 in order to focus on writing her debut novel, The Hesitant Heiress. It didn’t take her long to realize that writing books was what she was made to do. Dawn is represented by Joyce Hart of Hartline Literary.

Apart from writing books, Dawn is also a first-time mom to a precious little boy (born March 2014) and also serves with her husband in a pre-marriage mentor program at their local church in Northeast Indiana.

Dawn is a member of Romance Writers of America, American Christian Fiction Writers, secretary for the Indiana ACFW Chapter (Hoosier Ink), and associate member of the Great Lakes ACFW Chapter.

The Everstone Chronicles is Dawn’s first series with Whitaker House. All three books composing the series were semifinalists in ACFW’s prestigious Genesis Writing Contest, the third book going on to become a finalist in 2013.

product review: enLIGHTen by trinity

Today I have a different kind of review for you: a skincare product review. I was given the opportunity to try Trinity enLIGHTen Miracle Skin Lightener. First a bit about the product:

enLIGHTen is a skin lightening cream that uses natural ingredients to lighten skin, fade dark spots and treat melisma/hyperpigmentation. Melanin is produced by the body to darken skin, and enLIGHTen helps block production of melanin, so as skin regenerates, the new cells are lighter than those they replace. The result is gradual lightening of the skin. Unlike most skin lightening creams, enLIGHTen does not contain bleach, hydroquinone, mercury or any other harsh chemicals.

I received this product three weeks ago, so it's time for me to tell you my initial impressions. I have just a couple dark spots on my face—one close to my eye, and one on my nose. I also have terrible dark circles under my eyes. So my hope for this product was that it would lighten the two dark spots on my face and my under eye circles. (Note: Nowhere did I read that this product claimed to reduce under eye circles—I just hoped that it would.)

After three weeks, I honestly haven't seen much difference, but it's important to note that the directions say you'll see results in six weeks, so I'll update again at that point.

My initial impressions of the product itself: it has kind of a green tea smell to it—not bad, but not really nice, either. I do very much like the way it feels on my skin; it has a nice cooling sensation. Also, a little bit goes a very long way, so I'll be able to use it well beyond the six-week mark.

I am a little put off by the price (currently $39.99 on Amazon), but then I'm put off by a lot of skincare prices! 3 stars. (This may change at the six-week mark.)

Dauntless has a decidedly Robin Hood feel to it, yet Merry also evokes some recent dystopian heroines like Katniss and Tris. Merry does what she has to do to survive, yet she gains no pleasure from stealing. Her only goal is to keep the children safe—even if that means sacrificing her own happiness.

From the opening pages, when Merry and the Ghosts steal a chest of gold and become more notorious than they'd wished, the plot moves at a rapid rate. There's definitely no time for boredom! As Merry and the Ghosts seek freedom, there's grand adventure to be had, and I found myself latching onto the excitement.

There's also romance, because what would a YA title be without romance? I loved Merry and Timothy's back story, which comes out slowly through the book, and I loved how their current story turned out.

I really enjoyed Dauntless, and I look forward to seeing what comes next in the Valiant Hearts series! 4-1/2 stars.

Unraveled is an intriguing story of secrets, shame, love, and forgiveness.

As Lauren's story is slowly unraveled (for lack of a better word!), the reader is taken on a fascinating journey. It's difficult to truly describe in this review, as there are a few major plot points that I don't want to spoil, so I'll just say this: Lauren's story is one worth reading. Her romance with Blake is worth cheering for, and the revelations about her past kept me flying through the pages.

The one aspect of the story that didn't ring true to me was the character of Aunt Jane. She seemed so incredibly spiteful and vindictive, and while I could understand her pain, I think she was made out to be over-the-top evil.

Unraveled is the second Heidi McCahan novel I've read (after Covering Home). The two stories are incredibly different, and Unraveled was nothing like I anticipated—it was much, much better. If McCahan keeps churning out stories like this one, I'll be a reader of hers for a long time. 4-1/2 stars.

I've been on this Year of Weddings train for quite a while now—I read and reviewed all of the novellas in the first year, and I've read and reviewed most of the novellas that have released so far in the second year. As a whole, I haven't enjoyed the second year's novellas nearly as much as the first ... until now.

In Tune With Love is different from all the other stories in this series so far...different in a good way. It somehow seems grittier, edgier, more realistic than many romances. It's not that it crosses the line, but it's also not your typical inspy romance. It very much fits in with Matayo's other indy-released books The Wedding Game and Love Gone Wild (and probably Sway, but I haven't read that one yet).

I really enjoyed April and Jack's story, which actually reminded me a bit of Nashville. (This is a very positive comparison, as I completely love that show!) I also appreciated how the story ended. I don't want to spoil anything, but it definitely maintained the "realness" vibe.

Overall, I liked this novella a lot, and I'm looking forward to reading more of Matayo's writing! 4-1/2 stars.

Words cannot describe how much I loved this book! When I read book one of The Everstone Chronicles, The Hesitant Heiress, I liked it a lot, but there were things (specifically regarding the heroine) that I didn't care for. Not so with The Bound Heart! I loved everything about it—especially Meredyth and Lawry.

Lawry and Meredyth's romance is sweet and sigh-inducing, and it moves at a great pace. (It drives me nuts when characters dance around the romance and the first kiss doesn't come until the last 10% of the novel, and The Bound Heart definitely doesn't fall into that category!) Lawry's love for Meredyth shines through the whole book.

The book isn't just about romance, though. It also shows the power of forgiveness—both toward others and yourself. As Meredyth struggled with her past, she was trapped by lies, and I longed for her to start believing the truth—that God loved her and forgave her, no matter what, and she was no longer bound by the sins of the past. Of course, she eventually got to that point, and the journey there was so emotional and realistic.

The Bound Heart is easily one of the best books I've read so far this year, and I'm eager to read the next in the series, The Captive Imposter! 5 stars.

What do you hope readers take with them when they read your book?
The nicest thing a reader can say to an author is, "I just could not put your book down." When someone tells me that, I'm overjoyed. So I hope readers turn the last page with a contented sigh, yet wish they had just a little more time with the characters. On a deeper level, I hope readers recognize that I write from a Christian world view and God is a God of second chances, who can redeem us from hard seasons.

 Letters from Annie (Douglass) Lima - Behind the Scenes of Covering Home

Initially, I saw a call for submissions from a publisher for a story set in Tokyo, Japan that featured a bat, a bell, and an angel. For the non-writers out there, a call for submissions is something writers pay attention to because it's the publisher's way of telling writers what they are looking for. This particular publisher wanted a novella, which is about 25,000 words or so. As soon as I dropped Britt Bowen and Caleb Scott in the lobby of that hotel, I knew I had something special going on. Once the characters came to life on the page, I couldn't stop at a novella. It was sooo much fun to write.

I am such a sucker for baseball stories. Especially baseball and romance. . . . This is a good story, easy to read.

Christian Chick's Thoughts - Review

I especially appreciated how both Britt and Caleb grew as characters throughout the novel, and I enjoyed watching them forge a relationship. Fans of contemporary romance, especially those who like sports, will enjoy this novel.

Deal Sharing Aunt - My Favorite Sports Movies

     Movies about baseball, however, are available 24/7. I could watch The Natural again and again. I enjoy most movies with a sports-related theme, particularly if there is an uplifting, inspirational message.
     Here are my favorite movies with a strong sports theme that evoked a strong emotional response: laughter, tears, a compulsion to root for the underdog(s).

Katie's Clean Book Collection - Review

I couldn't help but to root for them, even though the odds were stacked against them. There were a few events that took me by surprise and I love being surprised. It's labeled as an inspirational read, but I didn't feel that religion played a big part.

Heidi graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Sports Medicine from Whitworth University and a Master's Degree in Athletic Training from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. After a brief career as a Certified Athletic Trainer, Heidi married her husband, Steve. They currently live in North Carolina with their three boys. 

When Heidi isn't stepping on Legos, chauffeuring the boys around suburbia or watching one of their many sporting events, she loves to read and write heartwarming romance.
