Review: "Wait for Me" by Susan May Warren

Susan May Warren has a way of creating series with characters that end up feeling like friends and family. After I finished the Christiansen family series, I was hesitant yet eager to pick up the Montana Rescue series—how could I possibly love the new characters as much as I loved the Christiansens?

Well, you've probably guessed by now that the PEAK Rescue team has stolen my heart. I've loved every book in the series, and Wait for Me is no exception. Wait for Me finally wraps up Pete & Jess's story, as well as tying up the loose ends regarding PEAK founder Ian's niece Esme/Shae (who disappeared in the prequel novella If Ever I Would Leave You). And it's wonderful.

Pete Brooks can't believe he's waited an entire year for Jess Tagg to return to Montana, only to have her break his heart by getting engaged to her ex-fiancé. Worse, a series of mistakes on the job have cost lives, and Pete isn't sure he wants to continue to work in Search and Rescue. Maybe if he can just get over Jess, he can figure out how to move forward.

EMT Jess Tagg has returned to Montana to finally give her heart to Pete, but it seems he's no longer interested. When a terrible fight between them sparks an impulsive decision, she finds herself crashed on the side of a highway along with Esme Shaw. And just when she thinks things couldn't get any worse, she and Esme are taken captive and into the untamed Montana wilderness—with murderous intent.

Now Pete and the other PEAK Rescue Team members are in a race against time, the elements, and the actions of a vengeful man. Pete will have to use everything he's learned to find Jess and Esme—and pray that his past mistakes don't cost him the life of the woman he can't stop loving.

Wait for Me is the perfect conclusion to the Montana Rescue series! It's fast-paced, exciting, and romantic with just enough suspense thrown in to make things intriguing.

I loved watching Pete & Jess's love story unfold throughout the series, and this is just about the perfect resolution for them ... even though I really struggled to like Jess in this book. After her true identity as Selene Taggert was revealed and she returned home to New York (in a previous book in the series), she stopped being brave, independent Jess and basically allowed others to make decisions for her in an effort not to hurt anyone. Only, as Shae pointed out, someone was bound to get hurt, and by refusing to make a decision, Jess was really hurting everyone, including herself! In the end, Jess did make a decision (thankfully!), and Pete and Jess's ultimate reunion was quite satisfying.

In addition to the romance, this book also contains a quite a bit of suspense. Ian Shaw's niece Shae (formerly known as Esme) has finally returned to Montana after hiding for years following the brutal murder of her boyfriend. The killer is still out there, and when Shae, her new boyfriend Ned, and Jess are run off the road and then kidnapped, it seems that the killer has caught up to her. Quickly, though, it becomes apparent that everything is not as is seems, and I loved all the twists and turns to get to the final resolution of the story that has been in the background ever since the prequel—exposing the murderer and bringing him to justice.

This is a phenomenal conclusion to Warren's Montana Rescue series, and I'm eager to read whatever she writes next! 5 stars.

  1. Each time I see one of these books reviewed, I am again reminded how awful it is that I've not yet read the rest of this series. 2019 will have to be the year I binge this series. :)
