Review: "Silent Shadows" by Natalie Walters

After reading Natalie Walters' debut novel Living Lies last year, I knew I'd found an author to watch! Somehow, I missed the second book in the series (something that will be remedied once my Libby hold comes through), but I was eager to dive back into the Walton, Georgia, world with Silent Shadows.

Pecca Gallegos moved to the tiny town of Walton, Georgia, to protect her son and escape the dangerous lifestyle that once defined her. When a series of strange circumstances evolve into threats, Pecca finds herself confiding in an unlikely ally--her stubborn patient.

Army veteran Colton Crawford is desperate to recover from the undiagnosed disorder that is ruining his life, and his instincts are on high alert when threats against his nurse and her son force him to take action. But Colton's involvement only ramps up the danger when he uncovers a family secret revealing that whoever is after Pecca is closer--and more deadly--than they realized.

With this suspenseful new story, Natalie Walters welcomes you once more to Walton, Georgia, where everyone knows your name--but no one knows your secret.

This book is such fun! I immediately loved both Pecca and Colton, and Pecca's son Maceo was the perfect little guy. I loved how Maceo and Colton each helped the other through their disabilities. The romance between Pecca and Colton was sweet, and, though it was fast-moving, it also felt authentic. And I loved where their story ended up!

The suspense aspect of this novel is spot on. I had a few moments of "this person doesn't seem trustworthy" and "there's more going on here" ... but I never would've guessed the truth. The twists in this book are pretty epic and very satisfying!

Other random things I loved:
  • The "meet cute" is hilarious, and I loved that no one ever let Colton or Pecca live it down.
  • There's a scene that's highly reminiscent of the While You Were Sleeping ice slipping scene.
  • This book exists in the same universe as Becky Wade's books! The Dallas Mustangs (and football player Vincent James) play into the story. The Mustangs are the team that Gray Fowler (Her One and Only) and Corbin Stewart (Falling for You) played for.
I did struggle to keep track of some of the characters at times (especially ones who were only names and never actually appeared on the page), but overall, the book was supremely enjoyable. I'll definitely be looking forward to Natalie Walters' next book. 4-1/2 stars.

    1. Thanks, Becky! I'm dying for my hold on "Deadly Deceit" to come through because I so want to finish this series (out of order ...). I so rarely go back and read a book that I've missed in a series, but I need to make an exception here :-)
