"Blind Spot" by Dani Pettrey

If you're looking for inspirational romantic suspense that's both believably romantic and believably suspenseful, you can't go wrong with a Dani Pettrey novel! (Believe me, it's hard to find romantic suspense novels that hit both of those aspects well, but Pettrey has the formula down.)

FBI agent Declan Grey is in the chase of his life—but isn't sure exactly what he's chasing after. Threatened by a terrorist that "the wrath is coming," Grey fears something horrible is about to be unleashed on American soil. When his investigation leads him to a closed immigrant community, he turns to Tanner Shaw to help him. She's sought justice for refugees and the hurting around the world, and if there's anyone who can help him, it's Tanner.

Tanner Shaw has joined the FBI as a crisis counselor . . . meaning she now has more opportunity to butt heads with Declan. But that tension also includes a spark she can't deny, and she's pretty sure Declan feels the same. But before anything can develop between them, they discover evidence of a terror cell—and soon are in a race against the clock to stop the coming "wrath" that could cost thousands their lives.

Blind Spot is the third novel in Dani Pettrey's Chesapeake Valor series, and the first thing you need to know is that it absolutely does not stand alone. Sure, you could read and enjoy it, but you'd probably be pretty confused about who was who for a while, and one of the two main plot threads is directly continued from Still Life. So if you haven't read Cold Shot and Still Life yet, do yourself a favor and pick those up before you dive into Blind Spot!

I really liked Cold Shot, and I enjoyed Still Life, but Blind Spot is on another level. Not only does it begin to pay off the overarching mystery of what happened to Luke Gallagher (childhood friend of series main characters Griffin, Declan, and Parker), but it also continues the terrorist plot started in Still Life. Then there's a side mystery involving a financial planner connected to the characters that felt like something that would be featured on a procedural crime drama. With so many plot threads, the story could become confusing, but I had no trouble keeping track of everything. (I did struggle to keep characters and plot points straight in Still Life—I think one thing that helps immensely in this book is that Declan's female FBI partner is on leave for the entire story, so that was one less person to keep track of.)

The main romance between Declan and Tanner was set up in Still Life, and it was nice to see that paid off in this novel. Tanner ended up being a much more interesting character than I'd anticipated, and I'd love to learn even more of her story. As for the suspense, I felt like this was just as suspenseful as Still Life, though not as dark (which I appreciate). The book ends on a total cliffhanger, and I'm very eager to read the next book!

The one thing I didn't like in Blind Spot has nothing to do with the story itself; it was the overuse of the word "pray"—not in the context of actually praying, but in the same way you'd use "hope" or "wish." It's one of those things that's not a big deal, but once I noticed it, each use jumped out at me. I get that the characters are Christians, so they probably were praying about those things, but it just sounded off to me to use "pray" (or a form of the word) exclusively. Like I said, it isn't a big deal, but because I found it distracting, it really did reduce my enjoyment of the novel.

I do think the story telling in Blind Spot is the best of the three novels in the series, and I'm looking forward to what is sure to be a thrilling book four! 4-1/2 stars.

    1. This one surprised me in the best way! I couldn't really talk about it much in the review because it would be a giant spoiler ... but yes, I'm thrilled there's another book to come!
