Review: "The Price of Valor" by Susan May Warren

Susan May Warren's Global Search and Rescue series (and, in a way, her Montana Marshalls series) ends on a high note with The Price of Valor!

Former Navy SEAL Hamilton Jones thought that the love of his life was dead. But when a girl claiming to be his daughter shows up with a dire message from his wife, Ham knows he will stop at nothing to find her and bring her home.

Kidnapped by rebels while serving as an interpreter in Ukraine, Signe Kincaid has spent the past decade secreting out valuable information about Russian assets in the US to her CIA handler. Fearing for her daughter after being discovered as an operative, Signe sends her to Ham for safekeeping. She's ready to give her life for her country, and she can hardly expect Ham to rescue her after breaking his heart over and over.

When Ham discovers the reason Signe has kept her distance, he must choose between love for his wife and love for the nation he has vowed to protect. Will he save the many? Or the few?

USA Today bestselling author Susan May Warren takes you on a global search and rescue mission where the stakes are higher than ever in this final installment of her popular series.

I am normally a huge fan of Susan May Warren's novels, but the first two books in the Global Search and Rescue series were slight letdowns for me. Too much mountain climbing (The Way of the Brave), too much peril (The Heart of a Hero). But The Price of Valor is just about perfect - romance, danger, intrigue, and a finally wrapped-up plot line regarding presidential candidate Isaac White and his running mate Reba Jackson.

In my reviews of the first two novels in the series, I said that you don't need to have read the Montana Marshalls series to enjoy this one. I guess that's still technically true, but most of the Marshall siblings and/or their significant others show up in this novel, so a basic knowledge of them and of the events in those books would be helpful. That series is where the story line with White & Jackson begins. (As this book reached its conclusion, I found myself wishing I could know how Kelsey and Glo [from Knox and Tate, respectively] reacted to the resolution with White & Jackson. I get why it wasn't included, but I still want to know!)

So, all that to say, read this series in order, and if you want the full perspective, read the Montana Marshalls first! Characters from (at least) the Deep Haven and Montana Rescue series make appearances, as well, and it's fun to see them, but none have backstories vital to the plot.

The Price of Valor is a wonderful, can't-put-it-down novel, and it's a great conclusion to the series. 5 stars.

Read my reviews of the other Global SAR novels The Way of the Brave (3-1/2 stars) and The Heart of a Hero (4 stars), the Montana Marshalls series, the Montana Rescue series, and the Christiansen Family series.
