It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (9-17-18)

Happy Monday! When I woke up this morning, my very first thought was, "What day is it? Why is my alarm going off?" It really felt like today should be Saturday or Sunday ... but certainly not Monday! That's because my weekend was unusual: my mom, sister, and I drove down to the Kansas State Fair on Saturday and drove back home yesterday.

The Kansas State Fair holds a special place in our hearts—I went every single year until I was 19 or 20. It was our mini vacation every year; we'd take a weekend in September to drive down to Kansas and go to the fair with my grandparents. (Often, there was an extended family reunion that same weekend, but I didn't look forward to that like I did the fair!) We hadn't been to the fair in several years, and it was so fun to be back!
Posing with the butter sculpture. I obviously have no idea where to look 🤣
Thanks to hours in the car, I read an entire book yesterday. It had been a while since I'd done that, and it was nice.

What I read last week:

The Orphan's Wish by Melanie Dickerson. This is Aladdin, retold. I've grown to love Dickerson's Hagenheim series, and this one was just as great as I'd anticipated! (4-1/2 stars, review to come)

What I'm reading now:

Lies We Tell Ourselves by Amy Matayo. Ever since I encountered Matayo's Bachelor-esque The Wedding Game, I've been a big fan. Lies We Tell Ourselves is completely gripping, and, while I'm nearing the end, I just wish it would keep going! Look for my review later this week.

What I'll read next:

I'd really like to read Michelle Griep's 12 Days at Bleakley Manor before I have to read the sequel for review next month. We'll see.

Did you go to your state's fair? (Or, like me, go to a fair in another state?) It felt like half the state of Kansas was at the fair on Saturday, so maybe you were there, too! Did you read anything good last week? Let me know, and then be sure to check out the linkup!

  2. Our 3 teens are in our county fair each year, and our county fair is actually bigger than our state fair (It's actually one of the biggest county fairs in the country). I typically would choose not to be a fair-goer, I hate crowds. But give me a day or two to walk around with our kids looking at their projects, seeing all the animals, and smelling all the foods. Oh...and let's not forget all the great concerts! I LOVE being able to go to the concerts with our family. We get free fair passes since the kids have projects, then the concert seating is free in the grandstand as well. We've seen some great concerts over the years including For King and Country, Martin McBride, Trace Adkins, and Rachel Platten!

What am I currently reading? An unconventional Sci-Fi by Nora Roberts (Of Blood and Bone). The language is horrible, the magic is a bit much, but the story-line from book one (Year One) drew me in so I had to grab the ARC of book #2 since it's not due out until December. What Christian Fiction am I reading? Moondust Lake by Davis Bunn due to release in December.

    1. A county fair bigger than the state fair? Crazy! Those concerts sound amazing--how cool that you can get in free!

I had no idea Nora Roberts wrote sci-fi. Interesting! Happy reading :-)
