Review: "Tate" by Susan May Warren

The Montana Marshalls are back, and this time middle brother Tate takes center stage.

What will it cost this bodyguard to save the woman he loves?

Bodyguard Tate Marshall has always been the family troublemaker. Maybe it’s his impulsive propensity to get into the middle of problems that don’t belong to him. But once in, he can’t stop himself from trying to solve them, and that includes his recent dilemma. He’s in love with the woman he’s supposed to protect, the beautiful Gloria “Glo” Jackson, daughter of US Senator and presidential hopeful Reba Jackson. A member of the country band, the Yankee Belles, Glo was targeted in a recent terrorist attack designed to deter her mother from running.

Glo is as stubborn as her mother, and Glo isn’t about to hide from threats, at least the kind that won’t cost her heart. Because she’s already paid a terrible price for the war on terror, and she can’t let herself love a man who might die, especially because of her.

As the campaign heats up and the threats deepen, so does the attraction between Tate and Glo. But when they’re discovered, and Tate is fired, what will he do to protect the woman he loves?
And what will Glo do to keep from losing another man to the costs of war?

The gripping second installment of the Marshall Family series.

Title: Tate
Series: The Montana Marshalls, Book 2
Author: Susan May Warren
Publisher: SDG Publishing
Release Date: July 9, 2019
Genre: Christian Romantic Suspense

Tate picks up right where Knox left off, with the Yankee Belles, Tate, and Knox in Vegas. (While Susan May Warren does provide a little recap prior to the first chapter, I think you'd definitely do well to read Knox first ... plus, Knox is excellent, so why wouldn't you?) Things quickly fall apart, as Tate's past comes back to haunt him, and Glo, the Yankee Belle he's falling in love with, gets injured in the process.

Glo's mom, a presidential candidate, convinces Glo she needs her help with the campaign, and Glo is immediately swept back into the high-class world she once escaped ... but reminders of her new-found freedom and identity are everywhere, especially when Tate joins her mother's protection detail.

I loved watching the back-and-forth between Glo and Tate! Both acted immaturely at times (but, in a refreshing twist, Tate saw right through Glo's actions and understood why she was acting the way she was), but they also both worked through some long-held issues and came out stronger and better for it.

There's a secondary romance in this book (of course) involving Tate's brother Ford (a Navy SEAL) and Ford's teammate Scarlett. Scarlett's past—no father, addict mother, prior sexual abuse—is heartbreaking, and I just want to see Ford be the man she needs! (That's coming ... the next book in the series is titled Ford.)

We also get to know Ruby Jane (RJ), Ford's twin, a bit, and she is sure to factor into the next book, as the cliffhanger revolves around her! Yes, as in Knox, the book ends in a cliffhanger, something I normally hate. I don't mind it so much here, as I know I'll be reading the next book, and it releases in just a couple months. But I wouldn't blame anyone for waiting until the entire series is out before reading any of the books!

One thing I absolutely love about this series is the way Susan May Warren subtly shows how our perceptions of ourselves and the way others perceive us are often completely opposite. For example, Tate believes he's the family coward, a failure, a disappointment to his late father. His brothers see him as a hero, and his father saw himself in Tate. This theme was present in Knox, as well, and I love it!

The Montana Marshalls series is one not to be missed, and Tate is a wonderful second installment! 4-1/2 stars.
